I checked out the meal suggestions and was very surprised to see so many ideas. I need to go back and check out the cook book. I think I'll enjoy the foods in it even when I don't have to eat a soft diet.

Hi Misty,
Just wanted to let you know that I'll be thinking of Shannon tomorrow and hoping everything goes well. I had braces myself when I was 12 and it actually wasn't too bad. I hope everything goes smoothly for her tomorrow.

Well....the braces are on!!.......mostly, anyway. She didn't het the bands because of her latex allergy. It almost a full extra hour because the Dr used wires instead. He couldn't do the bottom ones the same way so he ordered non-latex something or others that won't be in for a few weeks. Anyway, she says theres no pain & she ate dinner & brushed her teeth no problems! She even used the little tools for under the brackets! Tonight I'll get her to practice flossing with the floss threaders & she'll use the flouride gel.

I'm really glad it doesn't hurt. Now, if she will only continue to clean them properly she will have a gorgeous mouth in the future. ;D

I'm HOPING! I hope the novelty doesn't wear off & she doesn't then start giving them shabby care. I do intend to stay on top of things.

Misty, I'm so glad everything went for Shannon. I'm going to tell Becca how well Shannon did and maybe she won't be so scared when she gets them herself. I think the hardest part will be the cleaning. I understand how you feel about that. It's hard enough to get Becca to brush now. Wish me luck when she gets the braces, LOL. Anyway, so very happy Shannon is doing well. I'll look forward to hearing about her progess.

Well, now some of the tiny wires are starting to poke her in her mouth. The ortho said this is common & to try to tuck them in. A couple we cant get tucked so shes going in to have him do it this afternoon!

Misty,
So glad everything is working out with the braces and hope they are able to get those wires bent in the right direction. That's one thing that is good when you have braces, they will take you on short notice to fix any problems or discomfort you have. Hope she continues to do well with them. The end result is so worth it.

Well, yesterday her regular orthodontist wasn't in & another one did some work to get the wires to stop poking her. All was fine for an hour or so & then she started complaining that it was poking again. We tried everything but still it was bothering her. She finally went to bed around 10 PM. 10:30 she came down & told me she had fixed the problem. I didn't find out until this morning that the way she had fixed it was by pulling the ENTIRE top wire out! she told me she doesn't want braces anymore & will refuse to open her mouth for the orthodontist & if he wont take them out, she'll do it herself. I told her that we signed a paper saying we would assume responsibility for full payment if the insurance discontinues payments & they WILL discontinue if she yanks them out. Her response: "I don't care". Well, I called the Orthodontist & they will see her tomorrow. I explained everything & hopefully they can promise her a more comfortable wiring this time...I don't know WHAT to do if she outright refuses.

Misty, It is so hard to get kids to understand that in the future as an adult they will be so glad that they had braces. It's so far away in their minds that "one day" they will be a grown up. They only can comprehend NOW. Shannon-it will get better. It DOES hurt and it is very uncomfortable but it will be so worth it. ;D My older son will need braces soon and he is terrible in dealing with pain. He already says he will not get them and it's not even time yet. I showed him some pictures of people who never had but I bet wished that their parents had made them get braces.

Hi Misty,
Sorry things got a little rough with the braces. I hope Shannon is doing better now and they were able to fix the wires so they are more comfortable for her. The beginning can be a little rough but she will get used to them and eventually forget she is wearing them. It's just getting through the first weeks that can be a bit sticky. I don't even remember the painful part too much at all when I had them and she probably won't either. Hope this was a better week for you. Hugs to ya. Dee

Poor Shannon and i am glad things are better now. I know for help with brushing I think there is a gum available I think when there is no time for brushing. Look into it if not then I heard wrong. I guess keep up with the every 6 month cleanings.

we've used the wax. Shes doing pretty well now that they got the non latex bands on. Well, she WAS doing better anyway! A few days ago a wire right in the front came loose & was poking her. I found it was pretty easy to tuck back in so each time it came loose, thats what we did. Then today after school she told me it came loose again & was poking through her lip. The school nurse wasn't in so Shannon just yanked that whole top wire out (again)! Well, she has an orthodontist appt in a week or so, so I'm just letting it be until then.

I had no idea braces could be so much trouble. I just thought the biggest concern was keeping the teeth/braces clean. I guess I can't blame her for pulling it out...I'd have probably done the same if I couldn't get it tucked back in.
I bet you'll be more happy to have her out of braces then she will be. LOL

my oldest has had braces now for a couple months and it was interesting when she had to get 2 teeth pulled and the spacers put in - her teeth hurt for like 4 days with the spacers and she hurt and had to get used to the braces. She is pretty good not. Does ur daughter have to wear head gear at night? Mine needed her top jaw to realign as she grows so she got her head gear 2 nights ago. the first night was interesting - she got a head ache really bad from the thing!!! some advil helped, but she had a soft sore spot on her head from the band!!! My duaghter is real good about the care and flossing, but it takes her like half an hour to floss and yup the wax helps a lot!!! Just don't get whacked in the mouth - ouch - mine plays soccer and took a ball on the side of the mouth and it cut her lip inside pretty bad.

No head gear, thankfully! The braces are problems enough. She doesn't complain about them at all except when a wire starts poking her.

My oldest had to wear braces, and headgear. I could not figure out why it was taking so long for her teeth to be done...it was only supposed to be taking 9 months, and ended up being 18!
She told me once she was grown up that she used to take her head gear off after I checked her for the night! I would peek in on her (she seemed to be asleep) but the little sneak would wait for that and then take it off! She got herself up every morning ( I was getting up with her brother a couple times a night, he was an infant), so I was none the wiser til she told me!
Luckily our second daughter's teeth came in perfectly straight, and both boys' seem to be okay, too. Paying for those more than once with no insurance would not be fun...
