Does anyones kid have braces??? Shannon got her spacers put in today. She has to get 4 teeth pulled at the dentist & then its back to the orthodontist for the braces. The problem is, her inattentiveness to detail. Even on days I can get her to brush more than once, I know she doesn't do a thorough job. Plus she has a low tolerance to pain & tends to whine incessantly. Any ideas, tips, etc to help her care for them? I hate to go through all this only to have her have big ugly brown marks on her teeth when they come out!

Ok, well, they are taking the spacers out until she gets the teeth pulled. My poor baby woke up in the middle of the night screaming in pain. Her gums, face & even throat were swelling from the pressure. Bill took her to the ER where they gave her a shot to reduce the swelling & a pain shot & some percs to bring home. I called the Ortho to tell him what was going on. A bit later she was begging for more pain meds & couldnt even eat so I called him back & asked him why the hell he'd put those in before room was made & he told us to bring her in & he'd meet us there & remove them until the teeth are pulled. THATS what should've been done in the first place! ARGH! Well, I'd still like any hints or tips anyone has. Everything should be getting done in the next few weeks & I'll need a plan of action. Thanks.

Hi Misty,
So sorry poor Shannon had to go through all of that. That is so scarey. My sister-n-law has that allergy too and the same thing happened to her. I sure hope she is feeling a little better tonight. My daughter already had the spacer but hers was a type that she could take in and out and was more like a retainer. Luckily, she didn't experience much discomfort at all with it because she has a very poor tolerance for pain. We are now heading in the direction of braces and my daughter absolutely refuses to allow them to be put on so I am sure I am in for it. She also hates brushing her teeth and that has been a fight from day one. Sometimes my H or I actually brush them ourselves just to make sure she gets them brushed properly. She does them herself for the most part but I have to remind her constantly and I get pretty tired of it sometimes. I can't really give you any answers about the braces yet as I am going through it too but just wanted you to know that you are not alone. We may even have to put off her getting braces until she is a little older and can deal with it. The dentist is going to argue on that and I just have to prepare for it. There with ya friend. Not looking forward to braces for sure. Hang in there Misty and so sorry Shannon had to go through all that pain.

Thanks Losty. If Becca DOES get the braces on, we can compare notes. After all, Misery loves company!

Wow! Shannon is lucky she didn't have an even more severe reaction. That is really scary. If I ever have to deal with something like that, I will make sure its done first thing in the morning so we can see whether there is a reaction. I am so glad you got her there to get them out before it did get worse.

Yesterday I called the dentist to make her appt for the 4 teeth to get pulled. The Ortho had already called them toi give them a heads up on the latex scare. The nurse at the dentists was surprised because, as she said, they have used latex gloves on Shannon since she was 3 & nev er saw any effects. But my mom said a latex allergy can get worse over time & being that there was SO MUCH in a place where it could be easily absorbed into the blood stream was probably what made it so much worse so quickly.
Anyway, she gets the teeth pulled on the 19th & then the braces go on Nov 6th.

Shannon had her four teeth pulled today. Ok, Granted, shes in PAIN...I get that, but does she have to be so MEAN? Everthing I ask her (and i'm talking simple things like "Would you like a Tylenol" and "Do you think you could eat a pancake?") she SCREAMS at me, throws stuff at me. And I just asked her to pick up her bloody gauze off the floor....she JJUMPED 3 feet in the air (From a sitting position...she was on the computer), screamed & yelled, then ran over & PUNCHED me HARD! I've had it. Shes banned from the computer & I sent her to her room before I say something I'll regret.

Yikes. She is not a happy camper. I'm sure she is in pain but you were being nice. I don't know what to tell you except I think sending her to her room was good sick or not sick. Hitting just isn't to be tolerated. How was she while she got her teeth pulled? Did that go smoothly? I wonder if the novacaine (sorry...sp???) or whatever they used on her had an effect on her? Sorry you are having a rough day with her.

The thing is, she had a few shots of the novicaine & although shes very hungry, shes too numb to eat & its making her MAD! She says it doesnt hurt, its that she cant feel to move her mouth.
Anyway, I just went up to check on her & shes heaped under her blankets, half asleep. I sure hope shes OK in the morning.

Are you going to try to send her to school tomorrow? Do you have a prescription for any pain med they can give her in school?
When I have novocain, I get this fuzzy feeling in my face. I can drive but I have a problem communicating. Its like my social skills are sleeping too. I need to be left alone until it wears off. I usually end up sleeping. I hate for anyone even to talk to me. I can't explain it but I bet that is what Shannon is going through. Sending her to her room was probably best for her. It will force her to just relax and maybe sleep. I can't imagine enough of the stuff for 4 teeth. Ugh!
I hope she feels better tomorrow.

Hey Misty,
I guess you were probably dreading today for a while. Getting 4 teeth out at once is definitely rough. I had to have almost every baby tooth pulled because they didn't come out on their own. Not all at once though. Later on I had 4 permanent teeth pulled at once before I got braces. To this day I shake when I go to the dentist, even for a cleaning. Thank goodness I have a good dentist who knows how to handle my daughter and I both. Sorry to hear Shannon's been so rough with you. I know when Becca is in pain or in discomfort she can be pretty mean. She is weak in the impluse control area and she can get really nasty sometimes. I really can sympathize with you. I hope tomorrow is a better day. Hang in there. We're here for you to vent to. Sorry for your rough day.

Thanks guys! just an update....She got up at 9 hungry & ready to try & eat. She managed to eat a bowl of soup & a vanilla milkshake (Yes, Lisacap, I mailed you your shake! LOL).
Oddly enough they gave her no prescription & even if they did, I'd be unable to send it to school without jumping through a million hoops. My hubby has vicodin. If need be, I'll break off a piece & give her that but so far, tylenol seems to be enough.
Shes in better spirits though & went back to bed.

Shannon has started munching her way through her candy so she can finish it all before the braces go on! Less than a week now! I hear that soft foods are a must for the first few days & then for a day or so after every adjustment. My child does NOT do well with pain!

Misty, Ibuprofen works best-better than acetominiphin. Try giving her some right before her appt. to get them on. Does she have to get separators in before the braces? Most kids said that they were the worst part. Just talking about braces makes me get that feeling in my mouth of what it felt like to have them.OUCH

Yeah, she had separators BUT she swelled up & was in horrid pain after getting them...we ended up taking her to the ER. We ended up finding out she has a latex allergy! So, the Dr took the RIGHT OUT & we are proceeding without them, although she did have 4 teeth pulled.
