This past week Tiff was going to have a unit math test. She hasn't been doing real well in math and is already in a once a week tutoring session with other that are struggling.
So Tuesday I asked for extra worksheets to come home for us to practice. She sent us some home.
Then when the 4 page review sheet came home, I told Tiff to complete what she could and then I would look at the rest with her. She wrote in pen next to them the word "hard". When I looked it over she got the ones she did on her own correct. Then we went for the rest. I asked her to read it to me and tell me what she was supposed to do. She'd say "I don't know". Then I read it to her out loud and again asked her what to do and most of the time she understood and was able to complete the problem. Example she had to put numbers in order from least to greatest. She marked it hard. I asked her how she determines which is the lowest number. She said that they all start with 2 thousand so I have to look at the hundreds spot and then pick the lowest number. That was correct and then she got it right. I just had to put into slightly different wording for her to comprehend it. Test day I e-mailed the math teacher and the IST teacher to let them know I was concerned that she'd do poorly on the test if left up to her to read and understand it all. The math teacher used the same strategy that I used and Tiff got an 80%. When she was getting low C's to E's lately. Whoo hoo. And the teacher said she'd use the same technique next test.

That is great Uni. It sounds like her reading comprehension isn't good enough to understand the nuances in the math. Is she getting help with her reading also?

Uni,
So glad to hear your daughter did well. We have had to do the same thing with Becca with some of her Math. My H does it mostly now because it's getting more into algebra and that's where my Math ability becomes limited. He sits down with her and explains it in a way that she comprehends it better and she does better on the tests. Sometimes the teacher just doesn't get through to her, but with a little extra help at home she does well.

CG her reading comprehension has always been something that we have had to work on. So I am glad that they will use this strategy during the tests.

I think its great that they won't let that get in the way of her doing math.
