Adoring Listeners Give Struggling Readers a Boost No one pays attention quite like a dog. Take Aspen, a five-year-old golden retriever. Every week, Aspen travels with his owner, Lisa Benson, to a group home for boys in Newport County, Rhode Island. There, Aspen listens as the boys who live there take turns being his reading buddy........... Martin believed that in the presence of a therapy dog, children who were struggling with reading “…would be able to relax and become less anxious…be able to focus on their reading, and find reading fun, which would result in improved reading scores and improved self-esteem............... Read on: www.connectforkids.org/node/4236We have 2 dogs , a cat, & some birds. Back when Shannon was learning to read, she'd do SO much better when I heard her reading to the dog than she would when it was ME sitting with her. The dog wouldn't correct her when she stumbled, wouldn't zone out when she read the SAME book for the umpteenth time, etc. Even now that shes 12, I notice how much better her attitude about homework is when shes simply petting the dog while doing it!
Has anyone else had a similar experience?

You know Misty. I think that is a great idea! My neice loves her cats so maybe to lighten the mood for homework my sister could tell her to go read "it -whatever the may be" to the cat. I bet that would really make my neice laugh and get a kick out of it. I certainly think it is worth a shot especially if they make a habit of it. Sort of a fun thing to do. I'm loving it!

Let us know if & how it works, JJ. Will a cat sit still long enough? I know a dog (mine anyway) will sit there as long as they are getting attention. My cat, on the other hand, it has to be HER decision to want attention, or forget it!

Tiff has read to Max (our cat) before. Max will let Tiff do just about anything to her. So she puts Max in her baby doll carrier and puts the carrier next to her and reads to her.
