IDEA 2004 states that schools no longer have to use the discrepancy formula for identifying children with learning disabilities. One of the alternative methods being discussed and beginning to be implemented in school districts across the country is the Response to Intervention method, or RTI. Below is an article that explains what this method is and how it is used: www.schwablearning.org/articles.asp?r=840&f=search

RTI sounds really good on paper and if intervention can be implemented as soon as any signs of trouble that would be great!!! That said, the concerns some people have are, I think, valid concerns.
Maybe one of these days we will get things right so parents don't have to be constantly fighting the schools to get their kids help. Wouldn't that be great if it was just a natural process in the schools that flowed seamlessly for kids having difficulties.
Thanks for the article link, Lillian.

I really think that if the schools will use it and implement it properly it will be the best thing for them. So many kids will benefit that were slipping through the cracks before.
