Proposal aims to test schoolkids for learning disabilities Schools may be required to test first-graders for learning disabilities in an effort to shrink a stagnant dropout rate. The proposal is one of several that may surface in the 2007 legislative session aimed at identifying dyslexia and other learning disabilities. State officials estimate the dropout rate at about 40 percent. "Not being able to read is causing a lot of our children to get in trouble and go to prison," said state Rep. Alyce Clarke, D-Jackson. If schools would do that and then act accordingly, it could make such a difference in the lives of kids. My one concern is that if a child doesn't have a disability show up then, the school may hesitate to test him later if he is having problems, possibly missing any diagnosis at all.
